We killed the radio star - MTV Poster

MTV "We killed the radio star" Poster
On August 1, 1981, at 12:01 a.m., MTV was launched with the words “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll!” spoken by John Lack and played over footage of the first Space Shuttle launch countdown of Columbia (which took place earlier that year) and the launch of Apollo 11. Appropriately, the first music video that ever aired on MTV was 'Video Killed the Radio Star' by The Buggles. MTV just started a revolution in music and pop culture: we never looked at music the same way again.

This is the first assignment for my master's degree, Graphic Design and Applied Typography at LABASAD. Inspired by 'On this day in history', a brief issued 10 years ago by the International Society of Typographic Designers, the intention behind the project was to explore what happened on a specific date and translate it into a poster. If you know me even a little bit, you know how big of a fan I am of both music and pop culture, so this event was just up my street. I wanted the poster to directly reference those iconic early computer advertisements from the eighties. Both layout and type choices (a very condensed ITC Garamond) are inspired by them. Concept-wise, I had the idea of merging an old VHS camera viewfinder with a sniper scope in order to illustrate how the camera —or the video— literally killed the radio star.
